In 2006, a $13 million makeover transformed an unregulated boating and camping spot into Peanut Island Park, a county facility with camp sites, bathrooms and showers, a manmade reef, fishing pier and boat docks.

Peanut Island is publicly owned and operated as a public outdoor recreational facility. The park has been developed with the funding assistance of, and on property leased from, both the Florida Inland Navigation District and the Port of Palm Beach.

Welcome to Peanut island, a unique tropical park situated near the Lake Worth Inlet. Time to unwind and let the sounds of lapping water and fluttering palm fronds, the warm sunshine and soft breeze transport you away from your hectic everyday world to this scenic and restful island getaway.

A Bit of History
Peanut Island was originally created in 1918 as a result of material excavated when the Lake Worth Inlet was created. Originally called "inlet Island," Peanut Island amounted to only ten acres. by 1923 the Port was using the island as a spoil site for the maintenance of the Inlet and the Port shipping channel. The Port sold the northern half of the island in 1991 to the Florida Inland Navigation District as a spoil site for the Intracoastal  Waterway maintenance dredging.

Today, as a result of continued maintenance dredging of the Inlet and the Intracoastal Waterway, Peanut Island comprises 79 acres. The primary use of the island will continue as a spoil site, but the Port Authority and FIND have generously made the perimeter of the island available to the public as a park through a long-term arrange with Palm Beach County.

The name "Peanut" was given to the island when the state of Florida gave permission for use of the island as a terminal for shipping peanut oil. Plans for this enterprise were abandoned in 1946, but the name was retained.

Dock Use

• The boat dock is available on a first-come, first-served basis for day use only except by permit.
• Slips are not guaranteed for registered campers upon arrival. Day boats are asked to move off the dock at dusk, however, and registered campers can move their boats to slips at that time.
• Day boats may anchor off the beach or beach their boats except between the dock and the pier.
• Boaters can call on VHF Channel 16 for information about the dock or the park.

Peanut Island Water Taxi
Picks up from Riviera Beach Marina, 200 E. 13 Street from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day except Wednesdays and Thursdays. $7 round-trip. Call 561-840-2165.

Palm Beach Water Taxi
Ferry sails from Sailfish Marina Friday - Sunday at 10, 12, 2 and 4 p.m. Return trips are on the half-hour until 4:30 p.m. $7 round-trip. You cannot park at Sailfish Marina to take the Water Taxi, you have to drop coolers and supplies at the dock kiosk and then park at Ocean Mall (Singer Island Beach.) From there take the free trolley to the marina.

Camping
Camping is by permit only.
Fee: $15 per night + $1.50 tax
Check-in: 1 p.m., check-out: 11 a.m.
There is a three night limit - six people/one tent per site. Reservations are accepted ninety days in advance, once every sixty days.

Swimming & Snorkeling
There is a man-made reef on the south east side of the island for snorkeling and a marked swimming area and lifeguard station. Beware of the strong currents during tide changes at this area.

Fishing
Fishing is permitted from the fishing pier on the northeast side of the island only. You may not fish from the boat docks.
